I decided to give the hen house a good cleaning before winter hits, and to start working on winterizing the coop.
The first thing I do when ever getting into the coop is I leash up the goats and give them some oats to keep them busy, or they will be up in the coop driving me crazy and making it super difficult to do anything!
It had been about 2 months since the coop was cleaned out.. so looking pretty messy
I use a snow shovel to scoop all the shavings and uh extras out into a wheelbarrow (that I later dump into my compost bin) then I use a homemade cleaning spray that consists of vinegar and essential oils, the essential oils disinfect the coop safely. I make sure spray all over the inside of the coop, along with the nesting boxes.
While I let it air dry, I walk around the garden and gather some fresh herbs to tie into a bundle. Once the cleaner has dried I add fresh new pine shavings.
I hang the bundle inside the coop and lay some fresh herbs in the nesting boxes as well. It keeps the coop fresh and clean it also helps bring a sense of calmness to the coop and natural oils help deter bacteria growth helps keep down parasite and other unwanted pests, plus the ladies love to peck at them it helps to boost their immune systems.
The chickens are always curious as to what I am up to. I want to keep a happy coop… because a happy coop makes a happy chickens and happy chickens means happy egg layers!
